17/10/2022 (Agence Europe) – Nearly 19,900 people were killed on EU roads in 2021, the European Commission announced on Monday 17 October. The published figures represent a 6% increase on those for 2020, due in part to the drop in traffic caused by the Covid-19 pandemic last year. However, these figures also show a 17% decrease compared to 2019. In practice, disparities remain within the EU. While Sweden and Denmark recorded 20 and 22 road fatalities per million inhabitants respectively, the figure peaks at 92 in Romania and 81 in Bulgaria. However, figures for the first 7 months of 2022 show, for the time being, an average increase of 10% in road deaths compared to the same period in 2021. (TM)
