Media Freedom Act aims to regulate space, not content, defends Věra Jourová

27/09/2022 (Agence Europe)Present at the conference ‘A European Perspective: The Future of News and Debate in the EU’ organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the Vice-President of the European Commission, Věra Jourová, presented the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) (see EUROPE 13023/1). “It’s not about [regulating] the content, it’s about regulating the space for media [which] is becoming more difficult in all places of Europe”, she defended. The Commissioner also outlined the future European Board for Media Services. In the case of media sanctions (see EUROPE 12902/9), it will be able to issue opinions and ensure that the Commission does not go too far. Finally, Ms Jourová regretted the “lack of money” and the “economic model” that exacerbate the risks of pressure on media companies. “We did not find a way to resolve that in the EMFA”, she acknowledged.
