26/09/2022 (Agence Europe) – “The European Commission and its President, Ursula von der Leyen, work with the governments that emerge from the ballot box in EU countries. It will be no different in this case”, said its spokesman, Eric Mamer, when asked on Monday 26 September about the attitude of the European institution towards the future Italian government, the day after the victory of the anti-European far-right party Fratelli d’Italia in the Italian legislative elections. He said that he hoped for “constructive cooperation with the new Italian authorities” when a government is formed. “To see these elections as a judgement on Europe seems to me, in any case, an extreme simplification”, he considered, assuring that the Commission and the European Union were acting “in an extremely strong way” to respond to the problems of Europeans, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the repercussions in Europe of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
