S&D and Greens/EFA groups in European Parliament nominate candidates for 2022 Sakharov Prize

15/09/2022 (Agence Europe) – The S&D group in the European Parliament announced on Thursday 15 September that it had nominated several Ukrainian figures (the mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov) and organisations (public emergency relief) as candidates for the 2022 edition of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought (see EUROPE 13021/28). “Ukrainians are fighting for our democracy and freedom”, in the face of the Russian military invasion, it said in a statement. On Tuesday, the Greens/EFA group said it had chosen Brazilian Sonia Guajajara, who defends the rights of indigenous people and ran in the October legislative elections in Brazil. (MB)
