13/09/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 13 September, the European Parliament adopted a compromise text agreed with the EU Council on the transposition into EU law of conservation and management measures applicable in the area of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Convention (WCPFC) . The report by Isabel Carvalhais (S&D, Portuguese) was adopted with 581 votes in favour, 4 against, and 38 abstentions. The measures prohibit EU vessels from discharging plastic waste, fuel residues, garbage or sewage into the sea and include new rules on transhipment declaration, regional observer programme and best handling practices to protect sensitive maritime species such as the whale shark, the mobulid ray and the sea turtle.
