European Parliament approves six-month extension of EU-Mauritius fisheries protocol

13/09/2022 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 13 September, the European Parliament gave its consent to the extension of the fisheries protocol signed between the EU and the Republic of Mauritius. The report by Izaskun Bilbao Barandica (Renew Europe, Spanish), which endorses the original proposal, was adopted with 555 votes in favour, 25 against and 40 abstentions. This will allow the EU fleet to continue fishing in Mauritian waters for another six months. The continuation of the agreement should allow EU vessels from France, Italy, Portugal and Spain access to Mauritius’ fishing resources. The extension adjusts the fishing possibilities accordingly, i.e. 2 000 tonnes and an EU financial contribution of €287 500, of which €177 500 is allocated to the sectoral fisheries policy of Mauritius.
