06/09/2022 (Agence Europe) – The operation EUNAVFORMED Irini monitored 1,142 merchant vessels via radio calls between 31 January and 31 August 2022. According to new data published on 6 September, since its launch on 31 March 2020, Irini has monitored 7,142 ships. In seven months, the operation also visited 134 vessels with the consent of their captains, boarded and inspected three suspect vessels and diverted one. Over the same period, Irini investigated 218 suspicious thefts. It also provided seven special reports to the UN Panel of Experts on Libya. Since 31 January, through the Integrated Crime Information Cell, the operation has issued 11 recommendations to the relevant law enforcement authorities for the inspection of suspicious vessels in EU Member States’ ports, of which seven have been implemented.
