02/09/2022 (Agence Europe) – Too many people in Greece continue to be detained in conditions which constitute “an affront to their human dignity”, concludes a report by the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT), published on Friday 2 September following a visit carried out from 22 November to 1 December 2021 to assess the implementation of recommendations made over the last 10 years. As many issues remain of serious concern, the CPT calls for targeted measures as well as general recommendations concerning the fight against prison overcrowding and the distribution of prisoners between prisons, taking into account the proximity of prisoners’ families.
