The video game market is doing well in Europe. This is at least what emerges from the annual report of the European video game industry, published on Wednesday 24 August, which points out that revenues in the sector have remained stable, capping at €23.3 billion in 2021.
In more detail, digital games accounted for 81% of revenues, and smartphones and tablets remained the main growth drivers. While the sector had seen an increase in the number of players in 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there were even more in 2021 (124.8 million last year in Europe, compared to 118.3 million in 2020).
In addition, the report points out that women now make up 48% of the total number of users and highlights the fact that studies have recently shown that girls who play video games are three times more likely to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Furthermore, ‘e-sports’ are increasingly important for the video game sector, which represents just under 100,000 jobs. Global revenues for ‘e-sports’ exceeded €1 billion for the first time in 2021, thanks to a global audience of 489 million people. This makes Europe the second largest market in the world for ‘e-sports’.
