European Commission registers a new European citizens’ initiative against tobacco

24/08/2022 (Agence Europe)On Wednesday 24 August, the European Commission decided to register a European citizens’ initiative (ECI) entitled ‘Call to achieve a tobacco-free environment and the first European tobacco-free generation by 2030’. The organisers of the initiative call on the Commission to propose anti-smoking legislation to prevent new generations from becoming addicted to tobacco and to take action against the environmental dangers associated with it. Legal acts are required: - to stop the sale of tobacco and nicotine products to citizens born in 2010 onwards; - to achieve tobacco-free and cigarette butt-free beaches; - to create a European network of tobacco-free and cigarette butt-free national parks; - to eliminate tobacco advertising and its presence in audiovisual productions and social media.
