Follow-up of Conference on Future of Europe, EU Council will act at its own pace

The Council of the European Union takes note of the European Parliament’s resolution calling for the convening of a Convention to revise the European treaties, in a draft letter to Parliament submitted to the Member States’ ambassadors to the EU (Coreper) on Wednesday 20 July.

The EU Council will act “within its sphere of competence and in accordance with its treaty obligations in order to ensure the best possible follow-up to the Conference” on the future of Europe, the EU Council’s experts stress in the draft letter, a copy of which was sent to EUROPE.

Dissatisfied with the EU Council’s lack of willingness to decide on the convening of a Convention, Parliament asked the Czech Presidency of the EU Council at the end of June to invite the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, to put this issue on the agenda of the next European summit (see EUROPE 12984/15).

The Czech Presidency submitted a questionnaire to the Member States on the measures they could accept to implement the results of the Conference on the Future of Europe (see EUROPE 12996/18). (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
