On the basis of progress reports from companies that have signed up to the Sustainable Consumption Pledge, the European Commission said, on Tuesday 19 July, that the initiative was a success to be developed further.
To date, 10 companies or multinationals have signed up to the initiative, which was launched in January 2021 and includes five commitments, such as: calculating the carbon footprint, calculating the carbon footprint of certain key products, increasing the sale of sustainable products or services as part of the turnover (see EUROPE 12643/18).
The 2021 progress reports from Ceconomy, Colruyt Group, Décathlon, Engie, Erste Group, LEGO, L'Oréal, Phillips and Renewd were published on the same day.
“Thanks to them, consumers have more transparency on companies’ actions towards reducing their carbon footprint and improving product sustainability”, according to the EU Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders. In a statement, he “encourages more companies to join our Pledge”.
The Commission calls on companies to reduce their carbon footprint, while committing to at least one other aspect of sustainable consumption, such as reducing their environmental footprint, switching to a more circular business model and/or respecting social sustainability aspects.
