Russian invasion of Ukraine / State aid

Green light for €50 million in Greek aid for livestock sector in context of war in Ukraine

On Wednesday 1 June the European Commission authorised a €50 million Greek aid package to support the livestock sector in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The support was authorised under the State Aid Temporary Crisis Framework adopted by the Commission on 23 March 2022.

The Greek aid will take the form of direct grants to livestock operators affected by the rise in input costs caused by the current geopolitical crisis.

Eligible beneficiaries will be entitled to receive aid equal to 2% of their VAT turnover in 2021 or 2% of their gross income in 2020, depending on whether they were subject to VAT in 2021.

The aid will not exceed €35,000 per company and will be granted by 31 December 2022, which satisfies the Commission.

The Commission concluded that the Greek scheme was necessary, appropriate and proportionate to remedy a serious disturbance in the economy of a Member State. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
