Green light for €20 billion in German support for companies in context of Ukraine invasion

On Tuesday 19 April, the European Commission authorised a German scheme with a maximum budget of €20 billion to support companies across all sectors in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The support was authorised under the Temporary Crisis Framework for State aid measures, adopted by the European Commission on 23 March 2022.

The measure will be available to companies of all sizes and in all sectors, except the financial sector, which are affected by the current geopolitical crisis and related sanctions.

Under this scheme, eligible beneficiaries will be able to receive limited amounts of aid in one of the following forms: direct grants, tax or payment benefits, repayable advances, guarantees, loans, equity and hybrid financing.

The European Commission found the German scheme to be in line with the conditions set out in the Temporary Crisis Framework. In particular, aid will not exceed €35,000 per beneficiary active in the primary production of agricultural products, fisheries and aquaculture, and €400,000 per company active in all other sectors. The aid will be granted by 31 December 2022 at the latest. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
