SECTORAL POLICIES / Climate

More than 60% of Europeans believe that climate policies will improve their quality of life, according to an EIB survey

According to the fourth edition of the European Investment Bank (EIB) climate survey, published on Tuesday 19 April, 61% of Europeans believe that climate policies will improve their quality of life.

The survey of 30,662 people aged 15 and over in the 27 EU countries, the UK, China and the US shows that climate change is seen as the greatest challenge of the 21st century in all countries surveyed.

Nevertheless, 58% of EU citizens surveyed believe that their country will not be able to reduce its carbon emissions sufficiently to comply with the Paris agreement. 75% of them also state that they are more concerned about the climate emergency than their government.

Of the EU citizens surveyed, 70% support “strict government measures imposing changes on people’s behaviour to fight climate change”.

While 25% of Europeans surveyed fear losing their job because of its incompatibility with the need to mitigate climate change, 56% think that climate change policies will create more jobs than they will eliminate. The same proportion believes that climate policies are a source of economic growth.
