04/04/2022 (Agence Europe) – Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr said on Monday 4 April that some of the provisions included in the ‘Fit For 55’ package presented by the European Commission in July 2021 (see EUROPE 12764/10), represented a “serious threat” to the airline industry. The head of the German airline giant fears that work on reforming emissions allowances and deploying alternative fuels in the aviation sector (see EUROPE 12903/17) will provide an advantage to airlines that are not subject to these rules. “The major hubs on the EU’s doorstep and their respective airlines would benefit”, warned the German giant’s chief, arguing that this could mark “the end of direct access from European airports to international destinations”.
