According to Eurobarometer polls published on Monday 4 April, 47% of Europeans trust the EU, two points less than in spring 2021.
The highest levels of trust in the EU are found in Portugal (69%), Ireland and Estonia (63%), and the lowest in Greece (39%) and France (32%).
According to the survey conducted between 18 January and 14 February 2022, 44% of Europeans have a positive image of the EU and 38% have a neutral image. 62% are optimistic about the future of the EU, compared to 66% last spring.
Regarding EU policies, 69% of Europeans are in favour of an economic and monetary union with a single currency, with support reaching 77% in the euro area.
The survey, carried out before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, underlines that 77% of Europeans are in favour of a common defence and security policy between Member States. 95% were in favour in Cyprus, 89% in Lithuania and 87% in Estonia, compared with only 38% in Sweden and 33% in Austria, both non-NATO countries.
Europeans believe that the most important problems facing the EU are the environment and climate change (26%), rising prices/inflation/cost of living (24%), immigration (22%), the economic situation and health (21%).
