EU Council formally approves macrofinancial assistance

04/04/2022 (Agence Europe)On Monday 4 April, the Council of the European Union formally approved macrofinancial assistance of €150 million to Moldova to help this third country. It has been affected by the massive influx of refugees fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and required help to stabilise its economy and implement the reform programme agreed with the IMF (see EUROPE 12918/16). The aid will be paid out in three instalments between now and 2024, with €120 million paid in loans and €30 million in grants. In 2020, the EU had already approved similar assistance to Moldova to help it cope with the Covid-19 pandemic. This macrofinancial assistance is the second allocation from the current EU budget 2021-2027 after the one that was approved in February to Ukraine (see EUROPE 12889/11).
