Mairead McGuinness and Wally Adeyemo discuss possible future sanctions against Vladimir Putin’s regime

Brussels, 29/03/2022 (Agence Europe)EU Financial Services Commissioner Mairead McGuinness met with US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo on Tuesday 29 March. Speaking to the press, they discussed possible future transatlantic actions in reaction to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and directly targeting the Kremlin, which aims, according to them, to “divide our alliance(see EUROPE 12918/1).But instead, it has only strengthened the alliance that we have”, Adeyemo said. In addition to “significant actions” and their impact on the Russian economy, which is “contracting at a faster rate than it has since 1998”, Mr Adeyemo called for possible future actions against “key sectors of the Russian military industrialised part complex, to take it apart, to make sure that Vladimir Putin is not able to threaten the stability of European countries and the world going forward”.
