28/03/2022 (Agence Europe) – The High Representative of the Union, Josep Borrell, regretted, on Monday 28 March, the suspension of the activities of the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta until the end of the war in Ukraine, “as a result of censorship and following years of systematic intimidation by the Russian authorities”. “The decision, taken by Novaya Gazeta, is the result of the systematic crackdown on independent media outlets in Russia (...) imposed by Russian authorities”, the High Representative stressed, adding that Novaya Gazeta was a journalistic institution whose work is acknowledged far beyond Russia. “The European Union commends Russian independent media and individual journalists who defend the values of democracy, Rule of law and freedom”, he added. He warned that the EU would continue to support independent Russian media and journalists. (CG)
