28/03/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 28 March, the European Commission opened a consultation period for the revision of the mandate of the European Maritime Safety Agency. The mandate of the EMSA - established in 2002 - was revised in 2013. However, in the Commission’s view, it does not adequately reflect the Agency’s growing role in driving the maritime sector towards a “ sustainable and digital” transition. The review, the Commission warns, should in particular serve to better define EMSA’s role in these areas and to include new security threats, “from piracy to cyber security”. In addition, the next mandate should also serve to increase the Agency’s support to national administrations in their role as flag, coastal or port States.
