EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Justice

European Parliament gives positive opinion on four EU Council decisions on automated data exchange

The four texts of the rapporteur and chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, Juan Fernando López Aguilar (S&D, Spain), have been approved by a large majority of MEPs.

These decisions deal with the automated exchange of DNA and dactyloscopic data, as well as vehicle registration data in Italy and Greece. Both countries will be able to receive and transmit the types of data in question. These exchanges help to strengthen judicial cooperation between Member States in criminal matters.

These texts are part of the implementing powers conferred on the EU Council in 2008 by the decision on the stepping up of cross-border cooperation, particularly in combating terrorism and cross-border crime. The European Parliament has only been consulted on the four procedures. (Original version in French by Léa Marchal)
