The European Commission decided on Wednesday 2 February to extend the availability of real-time road traffic data in the European Union.
Through the adoption of the revision of the current rules, the authorities and entities in charge of the operation of regional and urban roads will have to provide data on traffic conditions. The old rules were limited to data for motorways, priority areas and Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) roads.
In addition to extending the provision of data to secondary and smaller roads, the new rules will require operators to provide new types of data, such as access restrictions for certain vehicles in urban areas.
“Better real-time traffic data is a prerequisite for improving our mobility”, said Transport Commissioner Adina Vãlean. “The rules we adopt today will increase the coverage and scope of this data and help make transport across the EU smoother, smarter and more sustainable”, she added.
These new rules will apply from 1 January 2025. (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
