European Commission launches four measures to fight cancer

The European Commission unveiled on Wednesday 2 February four new measures to fight cancer under the specific European plan it presented in February 2021 (see EUROPE 12650/1).

The first measure concern a registry that will identify cancer inequalities between Member States and regions within Europe. The tool also highlights inequalities in cancer prevention and care due to gender, education and income level, as well as disparities between rural and urban areas. It will guide investments and interventions made at regional, national and EU level.

A call for evidence from interested parties will also be used to update the December 2003 EU Council Recommendation on cancer screening (see EUROPE 8597/12). The EU plan sets a target of having 90% of the EU population being screened for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer by 2025.

In addition, a joint action will help Member States to raise awareness among citizens of the human papillomavirus (HPV) – a sexually transmitted infection that can lead to cancer – and will help increase uptake of vaccination against it. The goal is to eliminate cervical cancer by vaccinating at least 90% of the target population of girls in the EU against HPV and to significantly increase vaccination of boys by 2030.

Finally, a European network of young cancer survivors will strengthen the long-term monitoring of cancer care plans at both national and regional levels.
