14/01/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 14 January, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service described as “historic” the verdict of a German court in which a former Syrian colonel, Anwar Raslan, was found guilty of crimes against humanity in 2011 and 2012 in Syria. This former colonel of the Syrian intelligence services was in charge of a secret prison in Syria at the beginning of the conflict; he had fled to Germany. “This verdict is part of the first trial worldwide on state-sponsored torture in Syria and an important step towards the fight against impunity and to secure justice and accountability in Syria”, the spokesperson said in a statement. He reiterated the EU’s call to refer the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court. (CG)
