14/01/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 13 January, MEPs on the European Parliament Transport Committee (TRAN) approved the Interinstitutional Agreement reached between the Council of the EU and the Parliament on 15 June (see EUROPE 12742/13) on the revision of the Eurovignette directive (30 votes in favour, 16 against, 3 abstentions). This text includes an update of the rules defining the charges that EU Member States may impose on trucks and heavy goods vehicles using the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The new approach advocated in the revision of the directive should, in the long run, allow a shift from a time-based to a distance-based charging system to improve integration of the ‘polluter pays’ principle. The text will now have to be validated at the February plenary session. (TM)
