09/12/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 9 December, the EU Council appointed three new Director-Generals. Isabel Riaño is to become the new Director-General for Competitiveness and Trade (COMPET), a new Directorate General responsible for developing the EU’s competitiveness and international trade policy. Ms Riaño is currently Director-General for European and International Affairs in the Office of the Spanish Minister for the Economy and Digital Transformation. Italian Cesare Onestini will be the new Director-General for Agriculture, Fisheries, Social Affairs and Health (LIFE). Finally, the Director-General for European Policy at the German Federal Ministry of Finance and Director at the European Investment Bank, Thomas Westphal, will head the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs (ECOFIN). The three new Director-Generals will take up their posts in January and February 2022. (CG)
