27/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – On 26 October, French President Emmanuel Macron met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The French politician called on his Chinese counterpart to “rebalance the relationship between Europe and China to move towards greater reciprocity, notably in terms of market access”, reported the Élysée in a statement. It also called on the EU to lift sanctions against representatives of the EU institutions (see EUROPE 12683/1). In light of the ratification of the EU-China Investment Agreement (CAI), Emmanuel Macron called on Xi Jinping to ratify the International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions on forced labour. This is a commitment made by China in the agreement. The two leaders pledged to maintain close contact in order to make progress on these issues, according to the Élysée. (LM)
