16/09/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament called on Thursday 16 September for the creation of an association of young European fishers to “promote generational renewal in the fisheries sector and to represent and bring together young fishers and their organisations throughout the European Union”. The European Commission is invited to “support the mobilisation of budgetary resources for the implementation of projects to achieve this end”. Parliament adopted (650 votes in favour, 17 against and 20 abstentions) a report by Manuel Pizarro (S&D, Portugal) on fishers for the future. An amendment by several MEPs, including Izaskun Bilbao Barandica (Renew Europe, Spain) and Pierre Karleskind (Renew Europe, France), calling for the establishment of such an association was endorsed in plenary (635 votes in favour, 40 against and 19 abstentions).
