Brussels, 26/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said on Saturday 24 July that he had asked the European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex to look after “northern Europe”, AFP reported. The minister has recently visited Calais. During that time, several migrants had to be rescued while trying to cross the Channel. “I have referred the matter to Frontex, the European Border Guard Agency, which today is more concerned with the south of Europe, and I have asked them to look after the north of Europe, particularly the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coastline”, he said at a press briefing. “Sixty percent of the migrants who arrive here pass through Belgium, so our spectrum has to be very wide - we need European air surveillance”, he continued, adding that these will be priorities under the French Presidency of the EU Council.
