Fifteen NGOs and industry organisations call on European Commission to ban fossil fuel space heaters

A coalition of 15 NGOs and industry organisations sent a letter to the European Commission, on Thursday 22 July, calling on it to act to ensure that no new fossil fuel-fired heating appliances are placed on the European market after 2025, as part of the ongoing revision of the EU regulations on ecodesign (813/2013) and energy labelling for space heaters (811/2013).

In May, the IEA (International Energy Agency) concluded that fossil fuel boilers should no longer be sold as of 2025 to reach net zero by 2050”, the signatory organisations point out.

Specifically, they are calling for a downgrade, in 2023, of appliances with efficiencies under ƞs=105% into the least efficient F and G classes.

They also want a progressive tightening of minimum energy efficiency thresholds through the ecodesign regulation: (1) applying a minimum threshold of ƞs=87% to completely remove from the market in 2023, the inefficient electric boilers altogether and non-condensing fuel boilers; (2) a minimum threshold of ƞs=105-110% to remove all appliances mainly powered by fossil fuels in 2025.

Currently, 75% of the energy produced for heating in the European Union comes from fossil fuels. Space and water heating represents 12% of the EU’s CO2 emissions.
