The Chair of the Delegation for relations with Afghanistan of the European Parliament, Petras Auštrevičius (Renew Europe, Lithuania), and the Head of the Human Rights Committee of the National Assembly of Afghanistan, Naheed Farid, called on Thursday 15 July for the negotiating parties, including the Taliban, to openly engage in peace talks and accept a ceasefire and peace agreement.
In a joint statement issued at the end of the 6th EU-Afghanistan interparliamentary meeting, they urged Pakistan, among other things, to convince the Taliban to enter into serious peace negotiations.
Mrs Farid and Mr Auštrevičius deplored the violent actions of the Taliban, which they blamed for the constant fighting and atrocities committed. “Afghanistan can only develop in a peaceful and stable environment”, the two politicians said.
They also reiterated that the peace process should include the role of women and the preservation of their rights, and that they should be more involved in the negotiations on the part of the Afghan government, and in general, in the political life of the country.
