IEA warns that global demand for natural gas may be too strong to achieve net-zero emissions

06/07/2021 (Agence Europe)Even though global natural gas demand growth is expected to slow in the coming years, strong policy actions are still needed to put it on a path consistent with a goal of zero-net emissions by 2050, says the International Energy Agency (IEA) in a new report published on Monday 5 July. The IEA is particularly concerned about a rebound in gas demand in 2021 - after a sharp drop due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 - which is expected to continue with a projected annual increase of 3.6%. However, this growth is not expected to continue at this rate in the medium term, but rather to decline to an average annual rate of 1.7% for the 2022-2024 period, the Agency predicts, while noting that this slowdown “may still be too high to match a net-zero emissions path”.
