01/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – In a decision handed down on 1 July, the French Council of State ordered the country’s government to take, by 31 March 2022, “all appropriate measures to curb the curve of greenhouse gas emissions produced on national territory” in order to achieve the national objective of reducing emissions by 40% by 2030. Taking into account the decline in emissions in recent years, the Council of State considered that France’s climate targets do not appear to be achievable unless new measures are adopted quickly. This decision by France’s highest administrative court follows a climate inaction case launched against the French state in November 2018 by current MEP Damien Carême (Greens/EFA, France). Expressing his satisfaction, he called on the European Commission to take note of this decision by making proposals “commensurate with the (climate) challenge”.
