17/06/2021 (Agence Europe) – A group of 20 civil society organisations published a manifesto on Thursday 17 June calling on the European Union to phase out fossil gas with the aim of a complete exit by 2035. To this end, the manifesto calls for an immediate end to fossil gas subsidies and the mobilisation of public funds to help people and companies to switch from fossil gas. The signatory organisations also believe that only 100% renewable hydrogen can play a role in the energy transition, “in a few niche sectors where demand needs to be carefully assessed”. They also added that “blending hydrogen into the fossil gas mix must not be supported, as it does not significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, impacts gas quality, and increases costs for consumers”.
