15/06/2021 (Agence Europe) – Ministers from the member countries of the Union for the Mediterranean (27 European Union countries and 15 non-EU Mediterranean countries) signed a joint declaration, on Monday 14 June, underlining their commitment to working together for the energy transition of the Mediterranean region. The agreed text confirms the intention of the 42 countries to define priorities for enhanced regional cooperation in the energy sector, while referring to the acceleration of the implementation of ambitious roadmaps and targets for the increased application of energy efficiency and the deployment of renewable energy. It also stresses the need to step up public and private investment in these areas. Welcoming the declaration, the EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, said, among other things, that the ‘status quo could lead to the Mediterranean region warming by 2.2 degrees by 2040 compared to today.
