IPCC and IPBES call for joint climate and biodiversity action

Fifty experts from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), two UN organisations, published a joint report on Thursday 10 June highlighting the close links between climate change and the biodiversity crisis. Calling for both issues to be tackled jointly, the report particularly highlights the need to focus on nature-based solutions such as the restoration of carbon and species-rich ecosystems: “The cheapest and quickest nature-based climate mitigation measures to implement”. The experts also recommend increasing sustainable agricultural and forestry practices, such as diversification of plant and forest species planted, agroforestry and agroecology, as well as strengthening and better targeting conservation actions by expanding the area of land and ocean protected.
