24/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – European leaders welcomed on Monday 24 May the ceasefire that “should bring an end to the violence” between Israel and Palestine. “This is a necessary and important step”, European Council President Charles Michel told the media after the summit. “The EU will continue to work with international partners to restart a political process. The EU reiterates its firm commitment to the two-state solution”, he added, echoing the European Council conclusions. On his arrival at the summit, Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel described the region as “a powder keg”. “It is a powder keg and every spark can cause a big explosion”, he warned, recalling that it was really in everyone’s interest that the situation there be stabilised.
