21/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – In a resolution adopted on Thursday 20 May by an overwhelming majority (635 votes for, 27 against and 31 abstentions), the European Parliament deplores the killing on 20 April of Chadian President Idriss Déby and the recent violence and loss of life resulting from attacks by armed groups in the region. MEPs condemn the seizure of power on the same day by the Chad Transitional Military Council, the subsequent suspension of the Constitution of the Republic of Chad, and the dissolution of the government. They call on the Transitional Military Council to ensure an unimpeded and rapid return to constitutional order and to ensure respect for democratic values, while stressing that the recent appointment of a civilian transitional government, which includes members of some opposition groups, is a first step in this direction.
