On Thursday 20 May, the European Parliament called on the Haitian authorities to organise free, fair, transparent and credible general elections and to guarantee security during the polls. This appeal is contained in a resolution adopted by a large majority (639 votes in favour, 23 against and 31 abstentions).
Parliament notes that the failure of the October 2020 elections has led to a regime of government by decree and that rumours of failed coups reflect growing political and social instability in the country.
It also notes that the political opposition and civil society groups claim that President Jovenel Moïse’s term of office ended on 6 February 2021, in accordance with the decision of Haiti’s Superior Council of the Magistracy, but that he refuses to step down.
MEPs reiterate their deep concern about the deteriorating humanitarian, political and security situation in Haiti. They strongly condemn all human rights violations and acts of violence, in particular the increase in kidnappings, child trafficking to the Dominican Republic, homicides and rapes.
