07/04/2021 (Agence Europe) – The Coalition for Women in Journalism (CFWIJ) recorded an “astonishing” high number of cases of violence against women journalists around the world last month: a total of 111 acts, detailed in a report published on 1 April, some of which were carried out in the EU. In particular, Bulgarian journalist Desislava Panayotova was the target of a new attack on her place of residence. Cases of threats of dismissal, sexist insults and online threats were also reported in Croatia, Malta and France. European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová reacted to the publication via Twitter, on Wednesday 7 April, reiterating that the European recommendations on the safety of journalists, expected later this year (see EUROPE 12615/1), would focus on protecting women in the profession.
