26/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 25 March, the European Commission announced €500,000 in emergency aid for victims of the massive fire that destroyed a Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, on 22 March. This immediate initial assistance will target the most pressing needs facing over 10,000 families such as shelter, clean water, sanitation and hygiene, as well as essential non-food items. “The devastation caused by the terrible fire in Cox’s Bazar has worsened the already dire humanitarian situation faced by almost one million Rohingya refugees living in the camps”, emphasised the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič. The fire resulted in several deaths and injuries and almost the total destruction of vital infrastructure such as hospitals, health centres, the water system and learning centres. (AN)
