CETA contributes to economic recovery, says EU-Canada trade agreement joint committee

The second meeting of the Joint Committee of the Canada-EU Trade Agreement (CETA) took place under the chairmanship of EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis and Canadian Minister for International Trade Mary Ng on Thursday 25 March.

Noting the increase in trade between the EU and Canada compared to the period prior to CETA, the Joint Committee concluded that the agreement helps limit the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The meeting also saw progress on the development of a new strategic partnership on raw materials between Canada and the EU. This aims to reduce the risks associated with certain supply chains.

The joint committee also announced that an SME event would be held in September to mark the 4th anniversary of CETA.

Finally, both partners reiterated their support for the Ottawa Group on WTO reform.

The next meeting of the Joint Committee will be held in 2022 in Canada. (Original version in French by Léa Marchal)
