18/02/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 18 February, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service, Peter Stano, emphasised the EU’s “deep concern” over the continued polarisation of political parties in Georgia. The situation deteriorated further on the same day when Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia resigned as a result of disagreements within his team over the implementation of an arrest order for Nika Melia, the President of the National Movement, which is the principal opposition party. “The only way forward now is by reducing tension and engaging in political dialogue”, Stano argued. He called on all sides in Georgia to exercise restraint and act responsibly in order to overcome the political crisis. The current political impasse and continued polarisation can only serve those who seek to undermine Georgia’s stability, the spokesperson warned. (CG)
