ILGA-Europe reports “increasingly fragile” progress on LGBTI rights in EU

The European office of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA-Europe) published on Tuesday 16 February a mixed annual report on the situation of LGBTI rights.

The progress made is proving to be “increasingly fragile”. And the emergence of “more progressive” legislation in recent years has not yet led to real change in many States, says the report, which provides a country-by-country analysis.

In general the organisation notes a “substantial rise” in abuse and hate speech against LGBTI people, especially online. It reports an increasing number of people turning to the courts as well as a reorientation of the work of LGBTI organisations towards the provision of basic necessities at a time when many governments are leaving LGBTI people out of their aid programmes.

The report also points to an increase in verbal attacks on LGBTI people by political figures. Particularly in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Poland and Slovakia.

ILGA-Europe also deplores a significant increase in opposition to the rights of trans people. It notes a decline in Austria, Croatia, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, Slovakia and Slovenia, and stagnation in Germany, Cyprus and Sweden.
