05/02/2021 (Agence Europe) – Yoo Myung-hee, South Korea’s Trade Minister and candidate for the WTO leadership, announced, on Friday 5 February, her withdrawal from the competition. Her withdrawal thus gives way to the Nigerian Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Minister of Finance and favourite for the post. The United States had been blocking the latter’s candidacy since October 2020 (see EUROPE 12594/23). According to Bloomberg, several US leaders have called on the new US President, Joe Biden, to support Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. (LM)
