05/02/2021 (Agence Europe) – The future EU strategy on the rights of the child will contain new recommendations to prevent and stop female genital mutilation (FGM), five members of the European College of Commissioners, including the Vice-President for Values and Transparency, Vĕra Jourová, and the Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli, said in a joint statement on Friday 5 February. FGM “is a crime and a violation of human rights”, the declaration states. According to estimates by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), the rate of girls under 18 who risk FGM could reach 21% in Denmark, 18% in Austria, 17% in Luxembourg and 15% in Spain. A final report on the situation of female genital mutilation in the EU will be published by the EIGE by the end of May 2021. (AC)
