29/01/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 29 January, the main political groups in the European Parliament approved the setting up of a working group on the activities of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) suspected of involvement in pushbacks, announced Sophie in ‘t Veld (Renew Europe, Netherlands) via Twitter. She said the EU agency should now be more accountable as it is given greater responsibilities at the EU’s external borders. This working group, launched within the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, does not have the scope of a board of inquiry, but will nevertheless allow the shortcomings identified in the functioning of the agency to be addressed (see EUROPE 12641/22). The S&D, Renew Europe, EPP, the Left, and Greens/EFA support the creation of the working group. In addition, Frontex is also under investigation by the European Anti-Fraud Office. (SP)
