22/01/2021 (Agence Europe) – The EU deplored, on Thursday 21 January, the death of another Guinean opponent - Mamadou Oury Barry - who died on 16 January in Conakry’s central prison while in pre-trial detention. “This event adds to the list of political opponents who have died in detention in Guinea in recent months. These facts, repeated, highlight the malfunctioning of the Guinean penitentiary and judicial system”, the European External Action Service (EEAS) said in a statement. “The European Union calls on the Guinean authorities to remedy this situation and to ensure that justice can be fully exercised on the basis of independent investigations”, the EEAS says. And to recall that “the right to a fair trial and dignity for detainees is an integral part of Human Rights “. (AN)
