Mr Borrell welcomes Ms Sandu’s commitment to reform

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in his meeting on Monday 18 January with the new Moldovan President, Maia Sandu (see EUROPE 12602/22), welcomed the importance she attaches to reforms, strengthening the Rule of law and tackling corruption.

According to a statement issued by the European External Action Service at the end of the meeting, Borrell assured Sandu of the “EU’s full support in this endeavour”.

The High Representative and the President also discussed internal developments in Moldova and the need to take decisive and effective measures to regain the confidence of Moldovan citizens in state institutions, to establish a strong and independent judiciary, and to ensure the stability of the financial and banking sector.

The greatest threat to the state and the national interest is corruption, since judicial reform is the only way to guarantee the long-term welfare and security of citizens”, Ms Sandu said in a statement by the Moldovan Presidency.

Mr Borrell reiterated the EU’s commitment to strengthening political association and economic integration with Moldova and Ms Sandu reiterated her country's commitment to intensifying foreign policy cooperation with the EU.

The situation in Transnistria and Covid-19 were also discussed. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
